Burst sewer pipe pouring 500,000 gallons of sewage a day into Hopewell waterbody - Virginia, USA

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — A burst sewer pipe is pouring up to half a million gallons of sewage into a waterbody in Hopewell each day, with state health officials telling people to stay out of the water.

On Thursday, July 16, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) issued a recreational water advisory for Bailey Bay following a force main break — or the bursting of a pressurized sewer pipe — in Hopewell.

This pipe reportedly burst the morning of Tuesday, July 14, in the area of 1401 South First Avenue near Cattail Creek.

"The smell, the toxicity of the fumes that were coming out from this building,” said Cumming, "It stopped my agents in their tracks. It’s important the public understands how concerning this is to us.”

The employee echoed those concerns, describing crumbling floors and ceilings. They also note filthy locker rooms with broken showers and toilets.

“The toilets don't even flush. Half of them don't flush. I mean, I wouldn't even change my shirt in the locker room, let alone my whole uniform," they said, "I've seen facilities in the city jail that were better than that place."
